Jay’s Journey from Recovery to Role Model

When Jay first arrived at Serenita Care Home in the summer of 2019, he was facing one of the hardest chapters of his life. Following a hospital admission, he’d been told that if he continued drinking, the outcome could be fatal. Diagnosed with Alcohol-Related Brain Damage (ARBD), Jay needed more than just a safe place to stay, he needed a support network that could guide him back to independence and self-worth. That’s when he met Milan Mores, Manager at Serenita, who explained how the home could offer tailored support focused on recovery, rebuilding confidence, and regaining purpose. From the very beginning, Jay was met with warmth and compassion, qualities that run through everything we do here at Serenita.

Throughout his nine-month stay, Jay took steady steps forward. With personalised care, a structured yet flexible routine, and daily encouragement from our team, he began to take part in activities that reconnected him with his interests. From creative sessions and community outings to developing practical life skills, Jay made remarkable progress. The first turning point came when Jay started helping out in the kitchen. What began as a small task reignited his love of cooking. Over time, it became more than just an activity; it was a part of his recovery, and with every meal he prepared, Jay was rebuilding confidence and laying the groundwork for his future.

Jay left Serenita in March 2020. It was a challenging time for everyone, and for Jay, it meant facing personal loss and the isolation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. But he stayed strong, drawing on the resilience and habits he had built during his time with us. Supported from afar by our team, he remained sober, focused, and determined to move forward. Today, Jay’s life looks very different. He’s completed a marathon, travelled abroad for the first time, and now works full-time as a Chef and Kitchen Assistant here at Serenita. Each day, he brings empathy and positivity into the kitchen and enjoys supporting residents on their own journeys, just as he was supported.

Jay’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, recovery is not only possible, it can lead to a truly fulfilling future. His transformation from resident to role model is one that continues to inspire both our team and the people we support.

“Serenita didn’t just change my life — it saved it.” – Jay Rich

We’re incredibly proud of Jay and all that he has achieved. His journey speaks to the heart of what we believe in at Serenita, that everyone deserves the chance to heal and regain independence in a place they feel safe and valued.
